Wärtsilä has consolidated its presence in the Australian market with a contract to supply the equipment for an extension to the McArthur River zinc mine power plant in Northern Territory.

The 53 MW gas engine-based project is being undertaken by EDL NGD (NT) Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of international energy company Energy Developments Limited. The energy from the power plant is sold to McArthur River Mining Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of Xstrata plc.

Wärtsilä will supply six 34SG engines and related engineering services. Delivery is scheduled to be completed by early 2013 and the power plant is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2013.

Wärtsilä has supplied more than 600 MW of power generation capacity to the Australia and Oceania region.
