15 May 2008

Engine manufacturer Wärtsilä has received an order from a Brazilian independent power producer to deliver a 168 MWe power plant in Ceará state, northeast Brazil.

Under a EUR80 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, Wärtsilä will build the new plant at Fortaleza for Maracanaú Geradora de Energia SA. It will comprise eight Wärtsilä 20V46F engines and represents the company’s first order for this engine since it was launched in late 2007.

Wärtsilä will supply the powerhouse and well as ancillary systems and related buildings. It is also negotiating and agreement to operate and maintain the plant.

The new plant is expected to be operational for around 2000 hours/year, supplying energy to 36 distribution companies between December and April when water reservoirs are low. It will operate on heavy fuel oil.

Wärtsilä will begin constructing the plant in August 2008 and commissioning is due to take place in early 2010. The contract is the third that Wärtsilä has received from Brazil since March 2008.
