Two new power plants in Timor-Leste, formerly known as East Timor, will play a key part in the country's electrification efforts, according to Wärtsilä.
The Finland-based engine manufacturer has won orders from power plant developer Puri Akraya Engineering Ltd. to supply engines and other equipment for two power projects - one in Hera and one in Betano.
Delivery of the Hera project is to start immediately, while Wärtsilä expects to receive notice to proceed on the Betano project in the first half of 2011. The projects are an important part of the Timor-Leste government's modernization programme, which aims to improve the country's infrastructure and achieve national electrification.
For the Hera project Wärtsilä will supply seven 18V46 generating sets, as well as generators, auxiliaries, control systems and related equipment. At Betano it will supply eight 18V46 generating sets and other related equipment.
“Wärtsilä has long and extensive experience, and an outstanding track record in providing effective power generating solutions in a variety of climates and under the most challenging circumstances,” said Suraj Narayan, Business Development Manager (Asia) at Wärtsilä Power Plants. “This will enable us to successfully deliver and commission the power plants, even though the sites are at remote locations and the country's infrastructure is rather challenging.”
The Hera plant is expected to be fully operational in the first quarter of 2012, with 50 MW operational by the end of 2011. The Betano power plant is expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2012.
