Westinghouse, Shaw to provide four reactors to China

2 August 2007

Specific terms of the contracts with State Nuclear Power Technology Corp (SNPTC), Sanmen Nuclear Power Co, Shandong Nuclear Power Co, and China National Technical Import & Export Corp (CNTIC) were not disclosed. The four plants are to be constructed in pairs on China's eastern coast at Sanmen in Zhejiang province and Haiyang in Shandong province. Construction is expected to begin in 2009, with the first plant in Sanmen becoming operational in late 2013. The remaining three plants are expected to come on line in 2014 and 2015.

The comprehensive agreements follow February’s framework agreements that confirmed the basic requirements and obligations of all parties involved. Preliminary design, engineering and long-lead procurement work is already underway.

SNPTC announced in December, 2006 that it had selected the Westinghouse consortium and AP1000 technology. Shaw will provide engineering, procurement, commissioning, information management and project management services for the four units and previously announced the addition of approximately $700 million for this programme.

Richard F. Gill, president of Shaw's Power Group, stated, "We are extremely pleased to finalize these definitive contracts for four AP1000 units with SNPTC, Sanmen Nuclear Power Company, Shandong Nuclear Power Company and CNTIC." Westinghouse president and chief executive Steve Tritch, added: "The definitive contracts will result in the first-ever deployment of advanced US nuclear power technology in China."
