Wind-gas offshore hybrid given green light

16 February 2007

The Ormonde project will comprise up to 30 turbines to be sited off the Cumbrian coast 10 km from Walney Island near Barrow in Furness.

When wind, which is expected to supply about half of the output, isn’t sufficient, power will come via conventional gas sources pumped from two fields in nearby Morecambe Bay.

Lord Truscott said: “The Ormonde scheme is unusual in that it will combine wind and gas power to produce continuous electricity for the region. It is an exciting and innovative technological first that will make a contribution to our renewable energy aims.”

The project is being developed by Eclipse Energy and is scheduled for completion in 2010.
