Yaly hydroplant inaugurated

6 May 2002

The Yaly hydropower scheme, the second largest such scheme in Vietnam, has been officially opened. The plant, built at a cost of around $554 million by Vietnamese companies with technical support from Russian and Ukrainian technicians, has a generating capacity of 720 MW.

The station is located on the Se San river. It is equipped with four turbines, the first of which became operational in May 2000. By the end of last year all four units were supplying electricity to the grid.

With an expected annual output of close to 4 000 TWh, the plant will be able to supply more than 10 per cent of Vietnam's demand for electricity. The country's largest station is Hoa Binh, built by Soviet engineers in northern Vietnam.
