Zimbabwean coal mining firm Makomo Resources has announced plans to build a 600 MW power plant.
The firm says that construction of the $1.5 billion plant will begin in 2018 and is planning to increase coal exports to help fund the project. It has also sealed financing from Chinese investors, it said.
The new plant will help Zimbabwe to overcome power shortages that are crippling the industrial sector. The country currently produces an average 1300 MW of power, compared with peak demand of 2200 MW. This shortage has led to daily rationing and electricity cuts.
