Novel high-performance storage enters final construction phase

On 26 September Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) celebrated the topping-out ceremony of its electric thermal energy storage (ETES) facility in Hamburg–Altenwerder. The facility can store up to 30 MWh of energy and boasts maximum scalability at a low investment cost. The pilot facility is currently in the final construction phase, and all of the storage facility’s buildings and main components have already been completed.

Keeping track of GKM’s 260 cranes and hoists

The GKM coal fired plant in Germany uses some 260 crane systems and hoists of various types and manufacturers, for a range of tasks including coal handling and conveying, lifting of equipment and maintenance. Each of these cranes and hoists – from a simple chain pulley to the Kone-supplied 300 t turbine hall crane – requires a yearly safety-related check (UVV) as well as maintenance.

Eelpower buys 20 MW battery storage unit

Eelpower Limited has acquired the recently-completed 20 MW Rock Farm battery storage scheme from Anesco for an undisclosed sum. Eelpower is an independent provider of flexible energy services and has multiple long-term Firm Frequency Response (FFR) contracts from the National Grid. The acquisition of Rock Farm is one of a number that Eelpower plans to complete between now and 2022 to deliver 1 GW of storage capacity, at an estimated cost of £500 m.

Wärtsilä delivers its first engine/storage hybrid

Wärtsilä has delivered its first engine plus storage hybrid installation worldwide and its first EPC energy storage project in Europe, to Sinergy Kft, subsidiary of ALTEO Group, in Budapest, Hungary. The order was booked in Q1 2018 and the project was successfully commissioned on 22 August this year.

Wärtsilä has signed a “maintenance and operational advisory agreement” covering Hawaiian Electric’s 50 MW Schofield generating station, located on the island of Oahu, about 40 km from Honolulu. “The agreement will help the utility to maximise the availability and efficiency of the power plant”, says Wärtsilä.

While retailers grapple with the future of the energy supply business, equal turmoil in the business of generating and transmitting power was evident at the Electrify Europe event, 19-21 June in Vienna*. Absent from the exhibition floor were all the large scale turbine manufacturers – Siemens, GE and the like – and even the reciprocating engine specialists, such as Aggrekko and Wärtsilä, were not exhibiting. That reveals the state of the market, where the surge in renewables and distributed generation has made large power plant pretty much uninvestable – at least in Europe. The meeting buzzed with rumours that Siemens might sell its large turbine business to a Chinese company.
