Going supercritical: once-through is the key
20 December, 1998
As large gas turbine combined cycle plants reach the 60 per cent thermal efficiency landmark, heat recovery steam generators are moving into the realm of supercritical steam conditions. New boiler designs favour the high-pressure once-through mode, leading to more compact design and lower costs. J F Galopin, CMI, Belgium

Testing time for microturbine CHP
20 September, 1998
Research and development is crucial in enabling companies to ensure their long-term survival. This is, ultimately, a question of producing and commercially developing new processes, products and applications which will be attractive in future energy market. To achieve that aim, Vattenfall has built a demonstration CHP plant for a microturbine.

Compact CFBs scaled up for Tha Toom
20 July, 1998
Thailand's National Power Supply Co is building a circulating fluidized bed cogeneration plant at Tha Toom in Prachinburi province, comprising two 150 MWe units. Located within Industrial Park 304, north-east of Bangkok, it will sell 60 per cent of its power output to EGAT under Thailand's small power producer programme. The process steam and the remainder of the power will be sold to local industrial customers and to the nearby Advance Agro pulp and paper mill. In March, CMS Energy Corporation of the USA acquired a 50 per cent stake in the project, which had slowed as a result of the economic downturn in the region.

Advanced technology for Nordjyllandsværket Unit 3
21 May, 1998
In 1992, Danish utility I/S Nordjyllandsværket decided to add a supercritical, high efficiency coal fired unit at its power plant near Aalborg in Denmark. Construction is now complete, and start-up scheduled for October this year. Equipped with one of the highest efficiency steam turbine units in the world, and full flue gas cleaning, it will set new standards in power and heat supply.

Frame 6FA cogeneration commissioned at Kirkniemi
22 February, 1998
In 1995, Metsä-Serla was faced with the problem of securing reliable energy supplies for its expanding Kirkniemi paper mill. The task of finding a solution was outsourced to IVO, and late last year a new combined cycle cogeneration power plant was commissioned at the Kirkniemi site. Generating 105 MWe and 120 MWth, the new plant provides almost all of the mill's energy needs.

Jordan's first 400 kV GIS substation completed
22 February, 1998
The recently completed 400 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) substation at Aqaba on Jordan's Red Sea coast is the first part of the EJIST interconnection project that will eventually link the power systems of Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. The substation is also of national importance as it is the first 400 kV substation and principal point of interconnection as Jordan upgrades its present 132 kV system with a 400 kV network.
