CCS capacity sees 33% increase in 2020 – think tank report
01 December, 2020
In findings released by international think tank the Global CCS Institute, the total capacity of carbon capture and storage facilities operating and under development has grown by 33% world-wide over the last year. The ‘2020 Global Status on CCS’ report also finds that there is a total of 65 commercial CCS facilities in various stages of development globally.

North America thinking big on small reactors
05 November, 2020
Steps to revolutionise the adoption of micro reactors and small modular reactors (SMR) in North America are progressing at an increasingly rapid pace. Economic forces in both Canada and the United States, combined with the intensifying objective of cutting carbon dioxide emissions, are making nuclear power from next-generation reactors a viable, near-term energy alternative

MAN delivers molten-salt circuit for solar research at DLR
29 September, 2020
The German Aerospace Centre (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has commissioned MAN Energy Solutions to build a molten-salt circuit for its solar-research facility in Jülich, Germany. The plant is intended to help to further improve the process of generating and storing solar energy at very high temperatures.

Wind and solar power double their global market share
19 August, 2020
Wind and solar power accounted for almost 10% of the world’s electricity supply in the first six months of 2020, more than doubling their market share since 2015 when the Paris Agreement was signed. These findings, published on 13 August by energy transition think tank Ember, result from analysing the electricity output of 48 countries which together account for 83% of the global market.

Coal-plant retirements in Europe outpace new capacity
12 August, 2020
The size of the global coal fleet declined in the first half of 2020 for the first time on record, as plant retirements outpaced the commissioning of new capacity. In the first six months of the year, 18.3 GW of coal-fired power generation came online while 21.1 GW was closed down, signalling a net reduction of 2.9 GW to a total of 2047 GW, according to data gathered by the US-based non-governmental organisation Global Energy Monitor. Until 2019 worldwide coal capacity had grown by an average of 25 GW every six months since 2000.

CCUS gathers momentum
05 August, 2020
One indication of the increased momentum currently being enjoyed by the carbon capture utilisation and storage sector, predominantly in the United States, is that the Global CCS Institute, an international organisation promoting carbon capture, has recently added ten carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities to its global database of large scale projects – see table – nine of them in the USA, one in the UK (the Drax BECCS project).

Ocean Energy wins SELKIE tender
16 June, 2020
The SELKIE cross-border project aiming to boost the marine energy industry in Wales and Ireland has announced that Ocean Energy is the winning wave energy company following a tender call for participation in a pilot demonstration project.

Converting mobile GT gensets to synchronous condensers
12 May, 2020
A new white paper from APR Energy considers reactive power and the benefits of reconfiguring mobile gas turbine gensets as synchronous condensers.

Protecting the USA’s four wire distribution system
22 April, 2020
Electrical switchgear engineering firm NOJA Power reports successful installations and service performance of its Single Triple OSM Recloser in over ten US states.

ABB partners with China’s state grid
22 April, 2020
ABB’s Power Grids business has won several major orders to supply advanced HVDC converter transformers and high-voltage equipment for three 800 kV ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission links owned by the State Grid Corporation of China. The links will help in integrating hydro, wind and solar power generation, whilst reducing CO2 emissions. Financial details were not disclosed.

Eco Wave Power: can they succeed where others failed?
07 April, 2020
By locating power plants onshore/nearshore – rather than offshore – and making use of existing structures such as breakwaters and jetties, Eco Wave Power believes it can overcome the difficulties that have hampered wave power development to date.

Future proofing CHP units at Backnang-Neuschöntal
18 March, 2020
Two new gas engine based CHP units are now in operation at the Backnang-Neuschöntal site of the Rems-Murr municipal waste management company, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced emissions. Methane derived from biogas is injected into the combustion air of each engine, while the facility is SCR-ready and will be able to meet stringent new German NOx emissions limits for CHP plants coming into force in 2023.

A new benchmark for gas engine CHP flexibility
11 March, 2020
German municipal utility, Stadtwerke Kiel, has inaugurated its coastal power plant, Küstenkraftwerk – also sometimes called K.I.E.L. (Kiels Intelligente Energie Lösung (Kiel’s Intelligent Energy Solution) – described as “one of Europe’s most modern and flexible gas fuelled reciprocating-engine-based combined heat and power (CHP) plants.”

Membranes on the move for chemical-free degassing
03 March, 2020
The range of mobile water treatment services available to power plants has steadily widened over the years to including membrane degassing units, which avoid the need to use chemicals (such as hydrazine) on site.

Record decline in EU power plant emissions in 2019
06 February, 2020
In 2019, the EU electricity sector emitted 12 % less CO2 than in 2018, while the share of renewables in electricity production rose to 35 %, a new record.
