Saudi Arabia has started firming up on plans to invest in nuclear power to help meet rising domestic demand for electricity.
Saudi Arabia, which has plans to build 16 nuclear reactors by 2030, will begin the tendering process to construct the first of the new power plants by the end of next year, according to a statement from the King Abdullah Centre of Atomic and Renewable Energy. The site of the first reactor will be announced by March 2012.
“The bidding will be of a gradual pace rather than one award,” said a spokesman, referring to the construction of all the proposed reactors.
