Rolls-Royce, ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd (ASCO), and Landmark Power Holdings (LMPH), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at developing scalable solutions for clean power generation with carbon capture from mtu gas reciprocating engines. This strategic partnership is expected to help enable power generation customers to achieve their net zero ambitions. Rolls-Royce is committed to becoming a ’net zero’ company by 2050 and supporting customers in doing the same.

Plasma record for KSTAR tokamak

The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) at the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) in Daejeon has broken its previous plasma operation record, achieved during its first plasma campaign, following the upgrade of its divertors (plasma facing components) to tungsten monoblocks. KFE said it had sustained the plasma with ion temperatures of 100 million degC for 48 seconds during the KSTAR plasma campaign run from December 2023 to February 2024. Additionally, it achieved the high confinement mode (‘H-mode’) for over 100 seconds.

CIP acquires majority stake in Elgin Energy

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, through its flagship fund CI V, has signed an agreement to acquire a majority share in Elgin Energy, and will, together with Elgin’s retained management team, invest £250 million in the company, enabling it to deliver and expand on its existing 15 GW solar PV and battery portfolio.

TerraPower starts permitting process for the Natrium reactor demo

TerraPower has announced the submission of its construction permit application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Natrium reactor demonstration project. TerraPower believes it is the first company to submit its construction permit application to the NRC for a commercial advanced reactor.

It is located in Yallah on the western shore of Lake Illawarra in New South Wales, about eight miles southwest of Wollongong.

Start of construction at world’s first energy island

Offshore construction work on Princess Elisabeth Island, the world’s first energy island, is expected to start soon in the Belgian sector of the North Sea, as cardinal buoys have been deployed to demarcate an exclusion zone within which only vessels working on the energy island will be allowed, according to a Notice to Mariners issued on 26 March.

Global wind power production is ‘very predictable’

Eoltech, a prominent wind and solar resource assessment consultancy, has released the findings of a new study that aimed at assessing the variations of the global wind resource over the last 15 years. The data show that worldwide wind power production is very predictable, with annual variations remaining within a ± 3 % range. These results are based on the irec index, the wind energy index covering 80% of the world’s onshore wind farms installed by 2023.

Boost for developers via tax credit flexibility

On 22 March the US federal government, via the US Treasury and the IRS, published tax credits guidance with the aim of encouraging more offshore developers to claim credits based on their SCADA systems. The intention is to give offshore wind developers greater flexibility in how they take projects to financial close – and make them look at their SCADA systems with fresh eyes.
