According to recent research there is ‘overwhelming’ backing for the project among ruling party members of parliament and councillors, with more than four in five – 84% of Conservative councillors and 83% of Conservative MPs – saying that they support the project. If it is constructed, Swansea Bay tidal lagoon will be the first power station of its kind in the world.
The ComRes research, commissioned by Tidal Lagoon Power, surveyed 150 MPs from across the UK including 61 Conservatives, and 303 Conservative councillors across England and Wales.
Respondents felt that tidal power would deliver on the top priorities of securing long-term and reliable power, and would contribute to a diverse energy mix.
They also felt that it would be a potential first step towards a large new source of power that is both secure and long-term, that environmental impacts are manageable, and that it offers work to an extensive UK supply chain.
