Cummins finds a cool way to ExCel

21 September 2001

Cummins Gas Projects Division has installed a 1.35 MW genset to supply heating and airconditioning for the ExCel exhibition centre in London’s docklands. Operating 365 days and 24 hours the unit provides heated water at 130°F generated by exhaust gas waste heat for the winter months, and chilled water during the summer. The ExCel’s energy centre also contains three 6 MW boilers, two 2.5 MW absorption refrigeration units and a 3.9 MW vapour compression chiller. There are two diesel powered standby generators. In a power failure, the CHP unit is automatically switched out; the new unit then provides standby in parallel with the centre’s two standby sets.
