Engine maker Wärtsilä to build 52 MWp solar PV plant

18 July 2018

Wärtsilä has signed an EPC contract to supply a 52 MWp solar photovoltaic power plant to AM Solar BV/ Jordan, a joint venture of energy provider AES Jordan and Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co.

This is the first utility scale PV plant to be undertaken by Wärtsilä globally. NEPCO (National Electrical Power Company) will take the solar plant’s output and will be responsible for constructing the interconnection facilities. Wärtsilä’s scope is full EPC. The plant will be connected to a 132 kV grid. The construction of the new plant is expected to start in June 2018 with commercial operation expected in July 2019.

Following the contract signing, Pekka Tolonen, director, Solar at Wärtsilä Energy Solutions, commented: “We expect rapid growth in the use of solar energy ... Wärtsilä’s global capabilities in delivering turnkey power plants ... enable us to continue to develop innovative new solutions that deliver on the promise of sustainability today.”

Jordan is a very important market for Wärtsilä. To date, the company has delivered 900 MW of its Smart Power Generation solutions on an EPC basis, representing around 20% of the country’s installed capacity. The new PV plant is expected to provide jobs for 500 Jordanians during the construction period.

Wärtsilä also offers hybrid solutions – PV plants combined with reciprocating engine power plants and energy storage.
