Full steam ahead for Akkuyu Arabelle turbines

20 August 2019

GE Steam Power and AAEM Turbine Technology LLC, a joint venture between AtomEnergoMash JSC (AEM) of Russia and General Electric (GE), have announced the start of manufacturing activities in Belfort for the first Arabelle steam turbine to be installed at Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power station.

Akkuyu is Turkey’s first nuclear power plant and when completed it will have an installed capacity of 4.8 GW, provided by four Russian supplied VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors.

AAEM was awarded the contract in 2017 to design and supply the equipment and systems for the whole conventional island. As part of this contract, GE will supply the four nuclear turbine generator sets including the Arabelle half-speed steam turbine, Gigatop 4-pole generator, and condenser vacuum pumps. GE will also provide full design for its scope of supply and basic design for AAEM’s scope.

AEM and GE established their joint venture, AAEM Turbine Technology LLC (AAEM), in 2007 to provide comprehensive offerings for VVER conventional islands.
