Keeping track of GKM’s 260 cranes and hoists

26 October 2018

The GKM coal fired plant in Germany uses some 260 crane systems and hoists of various types and manufacturers, for a range of tasks including coal handling and conveying, lifting of equipment and maintenance. Each of these cranes and hoists – from a simple chain pulley to the Kone-supplied 300 t turbine hall crane – requires a yearly safety-related check (UVV) as well as maintenance.

To keep on top of the management of this large fleet and ensure reliability, GKM employs the cloud-based customer portal offered by Konecranes. This portal,, makes it possible to get a quick, accurate and clear overview of a fleet of cranes and hoists, regardless of the number.

At the beginning of each year, Konecranes service technicians co-ordinate the timeframes for maintenance and the safety- related checks with GKM.

The cranes and hoists in use at GKM have various years of construction, have been supplied by a range of manufacturers and have different histories. These factors must be taken into account during inspections.

For maintenance and inspection of the cranes and hoists, two Konecranes service technicians spend about three months at GKM. With, the technicians always have mobile access to comprehensive information – from technical data to test reports – via their smartphone or tablet, regardless of where they are located on the large power plant site. With every inspection, the service technicians update the data within the portal for each crane and hoist, and GKM can readily track the status of maintenance work.

Following maintenance, a test report is produced by Konecranes for each of the 260 cranes and hoists and advice given as to how to further optimise the units. GKM can access all these reports on-line through the portal. Especially helpful is that via the search function, the cranes and hoists can be ranked by various criteria, such as maintenance priority.

“Keeping 260 crane systems and hoists in view is a challenge”, says Michael Griesheimer of GKM, “but with, we exactly know the condition of each single unit at any time.”
