Recent power plant contract awards

Australia

National Power has won a £170 million contract to construct, own and operate a 500 MWe combined cycle gas turbine plant in South Australia. Work will start in March 1999, and the plant will be built by ABB. The first 150 MWe will be available by November 2000, a further 100 MWe by November 2001, and the remaining 250 MWe no later than 2004.

Ghana

CMS won a contract for a $60 million unit on the site of the Volta River Authority's (VRA) Takoradi Power Plant near Aboadze. CMS will hold a 90 per cent stake in the 110 MWe plant, although VRA has the option of increasing its 10 per cent ownership to 50 per cent. Alstom will supply the frame 9E gas turbine.

Mexico

Alstom won a contract for two 5 MWe geothermal units at Tres Virgenes on the Baja California coast. Construction of the $18.2 million plant will start in July, with commercial operation in October 2001.

Wärtsilä will build a 43 MWe power plant valued at $34 million in the state of Quintana Roo. Completion is due by the end of 2000.

USA

Southern Company won a contract for a simple cycle gas turbine peaking plant in Georgia, USA. A location for the site has not yet been finalised. The facility, scheduled for commercial operation in summer 2000, will be committed to the wholesale market, generating 400 MWe to fulfill a wholesale contract already established with Southern Company.

Florida Power & Light will build, own and operate a 248 MWe combined cycle power plant in Everett, Washington state. Construction will begin in late 1999, with commercial operation due in 2001.

Siemens Westinghouse and Black & Veatch will build a 500 MWe combined cycle plant in Tampa, Florida. The Payne Creek Generating Station will be completed by the end of 2001.

Siemens reached agreement with Carolina Power & Light to supply fuel assemblies to the Brunswick Unit 2 nuclear power plant.

S&S Energy Products won a contract to supply four GE LM6000 gas turbines to Illinova Corporation. All four turbines will be in service by June 1999. The turbines will be used in simple cycle mode for peaking capacity at Illinova's Tilton Energy Centre near Danville, Illinois.

The Western Farmers Electric Coop of Oklahoma, USA, awarded ABB a $16 million contract to rehabilitate and upgrade the 403 MWe coal-fired Hugo Plant. The contract will lower operating costs of the plant, reduction of NOx emissions, and boosting output to 475 MWe.

A coal-fired power plant will be built in Hazard, Kentucky as a partnership between Perry County Coal Company, and East Kentucky Power Cooperative. The plant is due for completion over the next 10 years.

Vietnam

Tokyo Electric Power Corporation (TEPCO) won a $400 million contract to provide a 700 MWe natural gas power plant for Electricity of Vietnam. Also in the consortium are Alstom, Electricité de France, and Sumitomo. The plant is Phy My 2-2, to be built in Ba Ria, near Ho Chi Minh City.
