The Romanian electricity distribution company SC Electrica SA has awarded a $19 million contract for the supply of a turnkey package of six 110/20 kV substations to ABB. The substations will reinforce the 110 kV distribution network at locations throughout the country to strengthen it against increasing electricity demand. Civil construction and installation works will be subcontracted locally. The project, employing modular indoor and outdoor substations, is due to be implemented within 18 months. One installation, in central Bucharest, will involve a two-story urban indoor substation and ABB will be seeking to demonstrate that it can build an installation that combines low environmental impact with high levels of safety at the site. Including the Bucharest substation, three of the six will be indoor developments. The remaining three, all in industrial areas, will use an outdoor design that is cheaper and easier to implement than the indoor design. ABB will also refurbish an existing substation in Comanesti, installing 13 vacuum circuit breakers and a new feeder bay.
