SJSC Uzbekenergo has invited submission of proposals from interested US companies qualified on the basis of experience and capability to conduct a feasibility study for the rehabilitation of Units 5 and 6 of the Syrdarya power plant. Syrdarya is the country's largest power station, accounting for around one third of Uzbekistan's power generation. It consists of ten 300 MW units which were commissioned between 1972 and 1981. In 1998 a turbine blade in unit 5 fractured, destroying the low pressure turbine cylinder, and the entire cylinder now needs replacement. Unit 6 is still in operation but output is substantially below design. The company that wins the tender will be paid a $225 000 grant from the US Trade and Development Agency, to whom enquiries should be addressed.
