Volvo makes a diesel for generators

5 April 2002

Volvo Penta has developed a high power output low maintenance compact engine specifically to power generator sets, the TAD1032GE, a 10-litre inline six-cylinder, turbo-charged air cooled diesel. What the company is describing as a 'modern fuel system together with efficient combustion' operates at low fuel consumption and low emissions. The engine meets TA-Luft requirements.

New features include electronic rpm control as standard. The fuel system is well tuned with an in-line pump and six hole injectors which, working at extremely high pressure, in conjunction with the advanced combustion chamber, provides the optimum distribution of fuel in the cylinder to give lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

The engine block is optimised for low noise levels, is fitted with a low revolution fan, and, to reduce maintenance, a vibration damped crankshaft with seven bearings. The cooling system is efficient with a gear-driven water pump, integrated oil cooler and high-capacity oil pump. Intake air is cooled by the air-to-air intercooler principle for the best efficiency.

Service intervals are lengthy, helped by replaceable valve seats/guides, valve control and replaceable wet cylinder liners. All these engines can be delivered as Genpac gensets complete with strong frame, cooling package and cabling already assembled. Weight is 1107 kg (dry), and 1254 kg (dry) for a complete Genpac. Prime power at 50 Hz: 266 kW (245 kWe, 305 kVA) and at 60 Hz: 262 kW (240 kWe, 301 kVA). In standby power mode at 50 Hz: 292 kW (268 kWe, 335 kVA) and at 60 Hz: 287 kW (264 kWe, 330 kVA).
