IAEA briefs UN Security Council on ZNPP situation

The International Atomic Energy Agency was on 30 May due to brief the UN Security Council on its proposals for safeguarding Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia NPP (ZNPP). “IAEA director general Rafael Grossi is planning to brief the UN Security Council on the nuclear safety and security situation” during a meeting chaired by Switzerland, according to an official statement by the Agency in advance of the meeting.

RWE becomes 100% owner of Nordseecluster

RWE has become the sole owner of the 1.6 GW cluster of offshore wind farms in the German North Sea known as the Nordseecluster, which consists of four sites in different stages of development and located north of the island of Juist. It was co-developed with Canadian company Northland Power, which has now sold its 49% shareholding in the cluster to RWE. The parties agreed on a purchase price of approximately €35 million.

Uniper ‘does not expect any further losses from gas supply obligations’

‪Uniper believes its precarious position has now stabilised and says that it does not expect any further financial losses from the replacement procurement of gas volumes arising from cuts in the supply from Russia since the middle of 2022. The associated natural gas supply obligations to municipal utilities and industrial customers for the years 2023 and 2024 are almost fully hedged by forward contracts. Further equity increases by the federal government will therefore no longer be necessary.‬‬

US-based Oklo and the Southern Ohio Diversification Initiative (SODI) have signed an agreement over the land necessary to host two of Oklo’s ‘Aurora’ design fast neutron microreactor. Oklo was granted a site permit in December 2019 from the US Department of Energy to build its first Aurora facility at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The latest IEA Monthly Electricity Statistics report including February shows that for the total OECD membership total net electricity production was 852.1 TWh in February 2023, down by 4.0% compared to February 2022. This decrease was seen in all major fuel sources (-4.5% year on year for fossil fuels, -3.4% y-o-y for renewables and -3.6% y-o-y for nuclear).
