Eight European transmission system operators (TSOs) have launched an open call for technologies that could increase the capacity of existing electricity grid infrastructure and help address growing network congestion.

The initiative, launched through the Grid Innovation Alliance, is seeking next-generation Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) that could improve the use of existing transmission assets without relying solely on new network construction.

Grid congestion is increasingly affecting the connection of new generation and demand, while creating challenges for renewable energy integration and wider electrification. The alliance is therefore looking for solutions that can help make more capacity available on existing infrastructure.

The call is open to innovative approaches from both the power sector and other industries, broadening the scope beyond established grid technologies. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their solutions could address network constraints and contribute to more efficient use of existing assets.

Selected applicants will have the opportunity to pilot their technologies with participating members of the Grid Innovation Alliance. The pilot projects are intended to provide a route for testing emerging solutions in operational grid environments and assessing their potential contribution to network capacity.

The initiative comes as European electricity networks face increasing pressure from the expansion of renewable generation, new electricity demand and electrification across sectors such as transport and industry.

Applications for the open call close on 9 October 2026. The participating TSOs will assess proposals as part of the initiative’s effort to identify technologies that could complement conventional grid reinforcement and support more flexible use of existing networks.
