Germany has opened a third call for proposals under its funding scheme for international hydrogen projects, offering support for renewable hydrogen and derivative production facilities outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

The programme, jointly backed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), is intended to support projects that could contribute to future hydrogen supplies to Germany.

Under Module 1, companies with a branch or permanent establishment in Germany can apply for grants towards investment costs of up to €30 million between 2027 and 2030. Eligible projects include facilities producing renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, with associated storage and transport infrastructure potentially covered where it forms part of the production facilities.

Projects must demonstrate a high level of German and European value added and include preparations for potential import routes to Germany. Scientific analyses, feasibility studies and other preparatory work can also qualify for support.

Module 2 is focused on accompanying research at technology readiness levels 1 to 3. Universities and research institutions can receive support, while training and development measures for early-career scientists and business professionals may also be included.

Project outlines for the latest funding round must be submitted by 17 December 2026. The programme is aimed at German companies developing international production capacity that could form part of future hydrogen supply chains to Germany.

A digital information event for prospective applicants is scheduled for 15 October 2026, providing information on the funding guidelines and application process.

The funding round follows Germany’s efforts to develop international hydrogen supply chains alongside domestic production. The programme is administered by Projektträger JĂ¼lich, which is also providing guidance to applicants and publishing application templates and information on the assessment process.
