Avangrid Renewables says that it is “very excited” to be playing a leading role in the growing offshore wind energy industry in the USA.
Avangrid, a subsidiary of Spanish energy firm Iberdrola, has been named by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) as the preliminary winner of an auction for the construction of the Kitty Hawk offshore wind farm off the coast of North Carolina.
Avangrid won the auction with a bid of $9 million for the 49 535 hectare site, beating off competition from Statoil Wind US, wpd offshore Alpha and Wind Future.
“We are excited to undertake the enormous task before us in bringing this project to fruition, and confident in its completion,” said James P. Torgerson, CEO of Avangrid.
According to BOEM, the offshore wind area stretches about 24 nautical miles from shore to 25.7 nautical miles in a general southeast direction. It is capable of producing 1.49 GW of energy.
“Between our leading position in the United States, including North Carolina, where we operate a wind farm near Elizabeth City, along with the expertise and experience of our international affiliate, Iberdrola Group, in developing offshore wind in Europe, we felt we were well positioned to secure this bid,” said Torgerson. “We are confident in our ability to leverage those channels, along with our supply chain knowledge and our development and transmission expertise, in order to deliver a competitively priced product to our eventual customers.”
