Brazil plans licence auction

27 August 2013

Brazilian energy research corporation EPE says that the country's government will auction off licences for more than 3500 MW of new electricity generating capacity in August.

Licences to be included in the end-of-month auction include hydropower, and coal and biomass-fired thermal power plant projects.

The plants are scheduled to enter service within five years.

The projects include the 400 MW Sinop dam on the Teles Pires River, a tributary of the Amazon, as well as licences for 16 smaller hydropower plants with a total capacity of 376 MW. Three coal-fired projects with a combined capacity of 1840 MW are up for auction, as well as 16 biomass-fired projects totalling 919 MW.
