Coal plants produce toxic rain

Rain contaminated with mercury is fouling Midwest USA lakes and rivers. Mercury is showing up in Chicago rainfall at levels 42 times greater than federal standards.

The report was released by environmental groups including the Environmental Law and Policy Center and the Sierra Club.

The report also shows that for the third successive year, emissions from the 14 oldest power plants across New England have increased. In the first half of 1999, the following increases were recorded:

  • SO2 5.5 per cent.
  • NOx 3.6 per cent.
  • CO2 4.7 per cent.
