Dong Energy has officially inaugurated its Gode 1 and 2 offshore wind farms in the  German North Sea.

The two wind farms comprise 97 Siemens 6 MW wind turbines with a combined capacity of 582 MW. The first turbine was installed in the North Sea some 45 km off the coast of Germany in mid-2015.

DONG Energy owns 50 per cent of both Gode Wind 1 and 2. The infrastructure fund Global Infrastructure Partners owns a 50 per cent share in Gode Wind 1, while Talanx, the third-largest German insurance group, also holds an indirect interest.

Four Danish pension funds, including PKA and Industriens Pension, have a total holding of 50 per cent in Gode Wind 2.

Dong took a final investment decision for Gode 1 and 2 in 2013. It is also building the 450 MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm in Germany, which will use MHI Vestas 8 MW hardware.

Earlier in 2017 Dong won the rights to build a further three offshore wind farms in Germany with a combined capacity of 590 MW. These are due to be completed by 2024, subject to a final investment decision in 2021.
