EDF delays restart of Cruas NPP over safety fears

4 December 2019

French energy major EDF has delayed the restart of unit 2 at its Cruas nuclear plant until 5 December while the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN)  continues a safety investigation following the 11 November earthquake.

EDF temporarily shut down Cruas's four 900MWe reactors for further safety checks following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake.

A spokeswoman for ASN said the investigation is still ongoing and ASN had not cleared any of the four reactors for restart. EDF had said no visible damage was found at the plant, but a sensor was activated, forcing it to suspend production for further safety checks.

Previously EDF had said Cruas 2 was due to resume production on  2 December followed by Cruas on  9 December.  Cruas 3, and Cruas 1 which has been offline since September for a scheduled maintenance upgrade, are expected to restart on 19 December.
