The Nigerian government has approved a plan to rehabilitate the country's eight power plants over six months, Reuters reports. The plants, with a gross generating capacity of 5876 MWe currently produce around 2788 MWe.
In addition to this programme of rehabilitation, the government is seeking private investors prepared to become develop power projects at 16 sites in Nigeria. The sites could support a total generating capacity of over 100 000 MWe.
In addition to supplying power for its own use, Nigeria also exports electricity to Niger and Benin. Even so, the country suffers frequent internal power cuts. Repair work is likely to concentrate on thermal power stations, rather than the country's two hydropower plants.
In an unrelated move, the governments of Nigeria, Benin and Togo held discussions recently about a project to interconnect the three countries with a 330 kV transmission link.
