GE has secured an order from Samsung C&T Corporation, which is leading the EPC consortium that will provide power generation equipment for units 3 and 4 of PetroVietnam Power Corporation’s Nhon Trach plant in Ong Keo Industrial Park in the Nhon Trach district, 70 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The project marks GE’s first H-Class gas turbine order in Vietnam. Once in commercial operation in 2025, Nhon Trach 3 & 4 is expected to deliver over 1.6 GWe, and it will be the first power plant fuelled by liquefied natural gas in the country.
Alongside the contract, on 11 May 11 a memorandum of understanding was signed by GE and PV Power for the development of solutions to improve the efficiency of the existing Nhon Trach 1 power plant and develop long-term co-operation for the maintenance for Nhon Trach 3 & 4.
Vietnam is currently heavily reliant on coal which fuels around a third of its electricity output. The growth of gas-fired power generation will support the coal-to-gas transition, and contribute to the implementation of Vietnam’s announced commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 by supporting the rapid expansion of renewable energy through its dispatchable power profile.
For the Nhon Trach expansion, GE will provide two blocks each of more than 800 MW including a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, the company’s most efficient 50 Hz gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, an ‘once through’ heat recovery steam generator and GE's integrated Mark VIe distributed control system.
The new power plant is expected to provide electricity for three large industrial areas in the southern region including Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces. “Renewable energy is expected to grow significantly in Vietnam while at the same time, lower-carbon and … efficient gas power generation will play a crucial role in supporting this growth while ensuring grid stability and reliability,” commented Ramesh Singaram, president and CEO Asia, GE Gas Power.
