German electricity consumption showed hardly any growth over the nine months to September, according to VDEW, the association of the national electricity industry. The 362 TWh used over the period is just 0.3% up on the 361 TWh consumed in 2003. Weather conditions, the gross economic profile and an increase in efficiency are significant factors, says VDEW.
Meanwhile, despite pledges to abandon the technology, nuclear energy, the largest single source, still contributes 28% of total capacity,, followed by brown coal at 26%. Hard coal and gas contributed 24% and 10% respectively while renewables contributed 8% of which wind, biomass, waste and solar energy comprised 5%.
