Greek court halts Evia construction

26 August 2017

A Greek court has placed a temporary halt on the construction of a wind farm just weeks after Enel began the build.

The Italian developer announced at the end of June that it had started construction of the 154 MW Kafireas wind farm on Greece’s Evia island but the Council of State has ruled that work on the project must stop while a case brought by local environmental groups is considered.

The Kafireas wind farm will be the largest wind farm in Greece when completed. Enel is investing €300 million in the project, which is due to enter service in 2019.

A number of local residents and the Association for the Protection of the Environment in South Karistia have brought a case against the Greek Ministry of the Environment contesting the wind farm’s consent. They claim that the wind farm will affected protected ecological areas.
