Guinea pig for the bug

19 November 1999

Brazil is setting up a scheme to help prevent potential millenium bug problems in Latin America. As the Far East will enter 2000 several hours before Latin America, an operational base will be set up in Chile and connected to New Zealand. The Chile base will note any problems that occur in New Zealand, and pass information on the impact of the bug to other Latin American countries, including Brazil. A senior Brazilian power sector official said: “Knowing in real-time what will happen with the bug in New Zealand is vital for Brazil to prevent the same problems happening here.”
