A consortium of Japanese firms IHI, Toshiba and Sumitomo has won a contract for the construction of a 1200 MW coal fired power plant in Bangladesh.
The contract is for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the thermal power plant and a deep sea port on Matarbari Island. It was awarded by Coal Power Generation Company.
The coal-fired power plant will consist of two 600 MW units and will operate on imported coal, helping to diversify Bangladesh’s fuel sources. It will account for ten per cent of Bangladesh’s installed generating capacity once completed.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is helping to finance the $4.58 billion project. Construction is due to start this year and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
