MAN wins 120 MW contract for McIntosh PP

14 September 2021

MAN Energy Solutions has contracted to supply 6 x 18V51/60G high output gas fired engines, along with the major balance of plant equipment to the City of Lakeland, Florida for its municipal utility, Lakeland Electric, which the City of Lakeland owns and operates.

Lakeland Electric and MAN will build the new 120 MW RICE (reciprocating internal combustion engine) McIntosh plant on a brownfield site in the city.

The new facility will run on natural gas and replace a recently retired, coal-fired plant, significantly contributing to Lakeland Electric’s commitment to the community to improve the carbon footprint of its power generation.

Both parties want to put the plant into service as quickly as possible, so MAN has committed to a fast-track delivery of all equipment to the site by July 2022. A 10 year service agreement has also been contacted.

MAN says that its top-of-the-line 18V51/60 2-stage supercharged reciprocating gas engine, which achieves an efficiency of approximately 50% in single cycle and up to 95% in cogeneration mode, combined with a sophisticated heat-recovery system designed to support the plant’s stand-by operation, perfectly matches Lakeland Electric’s stated commitment to affordable, dependable and sustainable electricity services.
