MHPS delivers Kusile boiler

13 September 2017

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has completed delivery of the first boiler for the Kusile power station in South Africa, it has announced.

The 4.8 GW power plant is being built in Mpumalanga Province and is a key element of South Africa’s power sector investment programme. The boiler delivered by MHPS is a supercritical unit and has already started operations, the Japanese firm said.

The new unit is one of 12 to be installed at the Kusile and Medupi coal-fired power plants in South Africa. Together the plants will add 9600 MW to South Africa’s grid, which in recent years has suffered from power shortages and a lack of investment.

MHPS has already delivered two boiler units to the Medupi power plant, which is being built in Lephalale, Limpopo province.
