NGK to install battery and PV combination

2 August 2022

NGK Insulators has elected to install a combination storage battery and PV system at its manufacturing sites in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The system will capture the renewable energy generated while the battery will power the manufacturing sites and double as a backup power source. The battery energy storage facility of 200 kW/1200 kWh will be the largest in the Hokuriku region.

The PV system will have a total capacity of 2.6 MW installed on the roofs of its Ishikawa plant and its manufacturing subsidiary NGK Ceramic Device Co.

The energy generated has a projected annual output of 2690 MWh. In the first year, an annual CO2 emissions reduction of 1340 tons is predicted.

The NaS battery will be installed at the Ishikawa plant. By using it for business continuity planning (BCP) as a backup power source independent from the grid, NGK aims to strengthen its ability to cope with the power interruptions and rolling blackouts due in part to intensifying natural disasters in recent years. Combining the NaS battery with the PV system will enable electricity to be supplied to important equipment at the plant for up to 10 hours when power from the grid is interrupted. Moreover, it will be used as a countermeasure against instantaneous voltage drops caused by natural events such as lightning strikes. NGK intends to will quantitatively assess the NaS battery’s effects, including those preventing production losses, by monitoring its at a production site.

The NGK Group aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 compared with 2013 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It is working on “expanded use of renewable energy” as one strategy to achieve those targets.
