Nuclear safety training centre

20 December 1998

The Russian Federation has opened a new centre to train nuclear plant operators and inspectors. The centre, at Obninsk near Moscow, was designed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, based on EU and International Atomic Energy Agency training facilities.

The project is the first fruits of three way initiative involving Russia, the EU and the USA. The initiative aims to improve safety at Russian nuclear sites and maintain a closer guard on Russian nuclear materials.
