The first power plant designed to take advantage of natural gas reserves discovered in the Marcellus Shale deposits in the USA has been commissioned.
Panda Power Funds says that its 829 MW Liberty generating station in Pennsylvania will benefit from access to the region’s low-cost natural gas reserves and will contribute up to $5.97 billion to the Northern Tier economy.
The Liberty combined cycle power plant is the first plant in the USA to use Siemens’ H-class gas turbines in a single shaft arrangement. It is air-cooled and was built by Gemma-Lane Liberty Partners under an EPC contract.
Panda Power is also building a second 829 MW generating facility in Pennsylvania – the Patriot combined cycle plant – as well as a 1124 MW power plant in the same state, near the town of Sunbury.
