Local planners in Alberta, Canada, have given the go-ahead for the construction of a 400 MW solar farm.

The Vulcan County municipal authorities have approved plans by Greengate Power Corp to build the Travers solar farm on 1900 ha of land near Lomond. The project will be the largest of its kind in Canada, Greengate said.

Greengate is planning to start construction of the C$500 million project this year, with commercial operation expected in 2021. It will use up to 2.5 million solar panels and is expected to operate for 35 years, the company said.

The Alberta Utilities Commission approved the project in 2019.
