Rolls-Royce in nuclear collaboration with OT Industries

Rolls-Royce has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with OT Industries, in a move that increases its strategic co-operation with local companies in Hungary. The agreement is to explore areas of joint work for the provision of emergency diesel generators and instrumentation and control (I&C) systems for the new reactors planned at the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary.

OT industries is majority owned by the MOL Group, a leading international and integrated oil and gas company with ‘strong experience in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects.’

Neil Parison, director for Strategic Accounts, Rolls-Royce, said: “As part of our intention to collaborate with Rosatom, Paks-II is a project of strategic importance for Rolls-Royce, together with the Hanhikivi-1 project in Finland and the Akkuyu project in Turkey.

“These projects involve VVER reactors for which Rolls-Royce is willing to provide mission-critical systems to ensure plant safety and availability, through highly reliable integrated emergency diesel generators, as well as proven digital and hardwired I&C technologies used for the main and diverse protection systems and for other safety-related functions.”

György Szondi, director of Nuclear Division, OT Industries, said: “Our company is mainly active in the Central and Eastern European oil, gas and chemical industries, implementing large scale EPC projects. However, we also have a significant 30-year nuclear engineering expertise. The activity of our nuclear division covers engineering design, general contracting, construction, production, project management and engineering expert services.”

The Paks nuclear power plant currently comprises four VVER-440 nuclear reactors. The Paks-II project involves building two additional Russian-designed VVER-1200 reactors.
