USA says Québec deal is a threat to national security

20 December 1999

A US Senator is taking legislative action to renegotiate a 30-year contract between Hydro-Québec and the state of Vermont. Senator James Jeffords said Hydro Québec posed a threat to the USA, as the deal between Hydro Québec and the 14 power companies in Vermont is why Vermonters pay high electricity rates.

Senator Jeffords said: "I believe that Hydro-Québec has demonstrated unwarranted market power in the USA, and that it represents a threat to economic and national security."
