Ocean Winds has been awarded development rights for a floating offshore wind project of up to 1.5 GW in the Celtic Sea, advancing the UK’s move toward commercial-scale floating wind. The award was made in 2025 through a direct process run by The Crown Estate as part of Offshore Wind Leasing Round 5.
The 358 km2 site lies in water depths of 71-88 metres off the coasts of England and Wales and may be built out in phases. It is the third Celtic Sea site to be allocated, following two earlier awards in June 2025.
The project was awarded to Ocean Winds, a 50:50 joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie, because of its track record in floating wind technology and its ability to deliver large-scale projects. The company has previously delivered the WindFloat Atlantic project in Portugal, is advancing the Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion demonstrator in France, and is developing commercial floating projects in South Korea and France.
