JA Solar has launched two battery energy storage systems for commercial and industrial (C&I) customers in Europe, targeting applications including solar repowering, peak shaving and backup power.

The JAPlanet Fusion is a DC-coupled hybrid system combining an inverter, battery storage and backup functionality, while the JAPlanet 2.0 is an updated AC-coupled battery system.

JAPlanet Fusion has a 261 kWh battery cabinet with a rated power of 125 kW. Up to 10 units can be connected for on-grid applications and up to six for off-grid operation. The system can accommodate up to 250 kWp of PV input, allowing additional solar capacity to be installed on the DC side while keeping AC output within an existing site’s permitted grid capacity.

JA Solar said this configuration could be used for repowering projects where increasing grid export capacity would otherwise require additional approvals or infrastructure. The system also incorporates an integrated static transfer switch, which the company says can switch to off-grid operation within 10 milliseconds following a grid failure.

The system uses liquid cooling and incorporates temperature, smoke and gas monitoring, aerosol fire suppression and redundant ventilation. JA Solar said the system has undergone system-level UL 9540A testing.

Ignacio Espinosa Gil, head of JA’s European technical team, said the system was designed for projects where ageing solar assets face grid constraints while businesses seek greater control over energy use and backup capability.

JAPlanet 2.0 also has a 261 kWh capacity and offers a maximum round-trip efficiency of more than 90%, according to JA Solar. It is designed to operate without derating at ambient temperatures of up to 50°C, while its thermal management system is intended to reduce auxiliary power consumption by 20% compared with conventional systems.

The system includes cell-level monitoring, UL 9540A certification and JA Solar’s JANebula energy management system, supporting applications including time-of-use optimisation, peak shaving and increased solar self-consumption.
