UK utility Scottish Power wants to build a 1 GW gas fired combined cycle power station at Damhead Creek, near Hoo, in Kent at a cost of about £500m ($687m) and has submitted a planning application for it to be developed alongside the existing gas fired plant at Kingsnorth Industrial Estate. The new power plant will be called Damhead Creek 2.
The multi-million pound expansion will more than double the output of the existing 792 MW gas fired plan at Kingsnorth t. Project manager Alistair Laing said: “There is an immediate need to generate more electricity as older power stations are being shut down and demand continues to grow. Damhead Creek has been operating successfully at Hoo since 2001 and is ideally located for an extended power plant.”
The development is expected bring 1000 construction jobs to the area over a period of three years and 50 permanent jobs when in operation as well as injecting £27 million a year into the local economy. The proposals for the new station will also include a provision that the plant be carbon capture ready.
