Engineering firm Siemens has handed over the Bugok II combined cycle power plant in South Korea to independent power producer (IPP) GS Electric Power and Services Co. Ltd. after a construction period of only 26 months.
The 565 MW power plant came on line one month ahead of schedule, says Siemens, and has been operating primarily in baseload duty since commissioning. The German firm also supplied the 550 MW Bugok I combined cycle plant.
Under a turnkey contract, Siemens built Bugok II and supplied key components, including two gas turbines, the steam turbine with condenser, three generators, water and steam cycle components, I&C and DCS system.
Bugok I and II are located in Danjin Province, 100 km south of Seoul. The two plants were the first project awarded to a foreign company by a South Korean IPP, and will help to meet South Korea’s electricity demand, which is growing at a rate of 5-6 per cent per year.
