Terra-Gen has commissioned the Monte Cristo I Windpower Project in Hidalgo County, Texas. The 238.5 MW facility marks the company’s second wind project in the state, strengthening its growing renewable energy portfolio.

Monte Cristo I is designed to generate more than 850 GWh of electricity annually. The facility’s output has been contracted to two corporate customers through long-term power purchase agreements.

Terra-Gen chief financial officer John O’Connor said the project represents both a technological and community milestone, highlighting the company’s focus on expanding renewable energy access across Texas and the United States.

The project also included significant infrastructure improvements, upgrading more than 36 miles of local and state roads to support regional transportation networks.

Over its operational lifetime, Monte Cristo I is expected to deliver more than US$100m in economic benefits to Hidalgo County through property taxes, landowner payments, and other local contributions.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez welcomed the investment, describing the project as both an environmental and economic asset. “This development represents more than clean, renewable energy – it’s an investment in our people and in long-term economic growth,” he said.

Terra-Gen now operates a combined 273 MW of clean energy in Texas, including its Big Spring wind facility.

Work is already underway on the second phase of the permitted Monte Cristo project, which will further expand the company’s renewable footprint in the region.
