Union Carbide is suing Fluor-Daniel and Siemens Westinghouse over supposedly defective enclosures which resulted in damage being caused to the generators at its Taft plant in Hahnville, Louisiana.

In 1995, Union Carbide purchased the two 116 MWe gas turbines from Westinghouse. At the same time, Union Carbide entered into a $122.7 million contract with Fluor to build a cogeneration facility at the Taft plant.

Union Carbide claims both companies failed to ensure that the generators were properly sealed off from outside air. The high humidity resulted in water ingress into the generators, leading to rust and corrosion.

Union Carbide is demanding that Siemens Westinghouse and Fluor-Daniel replace the generators that were installed under 1995 contracts. The suit, which alleges breach of contract, also demands damages from these companies.

Fluor-Daniel was responsible for the installation of the enclosures.
