Four offshore substations for the 1.5 GW Baltica 2 wind farm have been completed in Vietnam and are being transported to Europe, marking Vietnam’s first export of offshore wind substations to a European project.
PTSC M&C, part of Vietnam’s state-owned PetroVietnam group, completed fabrication, assembly and onshore commissioning of the substations at its facility in Vung Tau. The units were handed over during a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on 12 September.
Baltica 2 is being developed by Ă˜rsted and Poland’s PGE in the Baltic Sea. The project comprises 107 turbines and four 375 MW offshore substations.
The substations will collect electricity from the turbines and raise and transmit the power towards shore, forming a key part of the project’s electrical infrastructure.
PTSC M&C and Danish engineering company Semco Maritime secured the EPC contract for the four substations in June 2023, and fabrication began in November 2024.
Two substations are already en route to Europe, while the remaining two have been loaded onto barges ready for departure.
Once in the Baltic Sea, the substations will be installed on their foundations and connected to the turbines and export transmission system.
Baltica 2 has a capacity of approximately 1.5GW and is scheduled to enter operation in the fourth quarter of 2027.
